There are half-days in winter
When, lying on your back on snow,
Your bundled heart calm and warm
Within your bundled clothes,
You mesmerize the heavy skies, clouded overhead and dark

And notice a single break in the pillarless roof,
A bright blue hole gilded white
In the surrounding grey;
And you’re tricked for a moment to believe
That the whole boundless, weighty thing is about to cave in
And shudder the earth;
From some slanted part of you,
You kind of hope it will.
