Watertalk

If you are ever in San Francisco on a (relatively) warm and (relatively) windless night, walk to the northern end of Fillmore Street, then cross the Marina Green to stand at the edge of the water. Make sure it’s dark and late enough for the people to have gone. Now listen to the water lapping in tiny crashes against the stone bulwark, as if a voice were speaking to you:

“The world is joyful because it is.”

“The world is heartbroken because it cannot last.”
